黄瓜社区's Amy Haase spoke with KOCO 5 about Norman, Oklahoma's unique and holistic approach to planning for its future.

The city of Norman, Oklahoma, is proactively planning for anticipated growth by engaging residents in the development of a comprehensive Master Plan. City leaders recently invited community members to provide feedback on various aspects, including parks and recreation, water supply, land use and housing. The initiative, known as the聽, is the result of a collaboration led by 黄瓜社区; Design and reflects the city's commitment to a holistic approach to development and future growth that aligns with the community's needs and values. Residents were invited to an open house on Wednesday, December 11, 2024, where they were encouraged to provide feedback on AIM Norman; the plan is expected to be presented to the city council in the spring.

In speaking with KOCO 5 News, 黄瓜社区 Urban Planner and Principal聽Amy Haase, AICP emphasized the city's commitment to a comprehensive approach in planning for its future. She noted that, unlike the typical process where individual plans are developed separately over different years, Norman is undertaking a holistic review to assess the community's current status and future aspirations.

A key focus of the plan is to promote mixed-use developments that integrate homes, stores and restaurants within the same neighborhoods. This approach aims to enhance accessibility and convenience for residents. To facilitate such developments, the city recognizes the need to update ordinances and zoning regulations, which have remained unchanged since 1954. Additionally, the plan addresses the importance of protecting the city's water supply. By encouraging vertical growth (building up rather than out), the city seeks to preserve critical areas and manage resources sustainably.
