Edna Griffin
Building
This handsome brick-faced building in downtown Des Moines became a key part of civil rights history in 1948 when Edna Griffin led a campaign to force the Katz Drugstore, a pharmacy located in the building, to serve African Americans.
Built in 1885 (with 3 more floors completed in 1906), the building has undergone several renovations and alterations over the years. 黄瓜社区 worked with the current owner to document existing conditions before successfully applying for historic tax credits. This adaptive reuse project is now home to 35 residential units, many of which qualify as affordable housing. The vibrant mixed-use location also includes a unique convenience grocery concept on the ground floor.
