Tomorrow's
Corridor:
Rethinking 71B

Client
City of Fayetteville
Location
Fayetteville, AR
Completion date
October 2019

Citizens of Fayetteville had different visions for the 71B corridor, the primary north-south arterial through the city. This concept and comprehensive planning project incorporated an extensive visioning program about the role and future character of the street, major land use and transportation planning components, pedestrian and bicycle systems, urban design and a regulating plan.

Citizens of Fayetteville have different visions for the 71B corridor. The concepts of advocating higher densities, mixed uses, human scale, street orientation, and connectivity are deeply engrained in the city's design philosophy. Some people envision a transformed corridor that eventually produces a high-density, transit-oriented, mixed-use environment capable of accommodating a significant part of Fayetteville's projected residential growth. Other people believe that 71B should be improved physically and functionally, but remain a regional, auto-oriented arterial dominated by commercial uses. The plan presents the concept of corridor urbanism that grows from and respects the character and economy of the corridor, but integrates the quality of place and urban interaction that mark Fayetteville's development aspirations.
